StageQ invites you to submit YOUR short play for our fourth annual festival of short queer plays, Queer Shorts 4. Queer Shorts 1, 2 & 3 were sold-out smash hits, and you could be part of the fun during our 2009 playfest!
Playwright: Who, me?
StageQ: Yes, you. Whether you are a closeted playwright or a famous published writer, we want you.
Playwright: Why me?
StageQ: Why you? Because no one else can tell your stories like you do.
Playwright: But…what do I do?
StageQ: Simple. You write a play, 5-15 minutes in length, and you send it to StageQ. By October 1, 2008.
Playwright: I don’t know what to write about. I have so many stories. Which one do you want?
StageQ: Well, heck, you’re the writer. You decide. Would it fit into something called Queer Shorts?
Playwright: Ok, so I write this play. Then what happens?
Stage Q: You send it to us, along with a one-page précis, including:
One-paragraph description of the plot
-
Casting requirements (number of actors, gender, ages, special requirements, if any)
-
Set requirements (remember, this is a playfest with 10 – 12 plays in one evening; simple is better!)
-
Running time (no more than 15 minutes!)
-
Special technical requirements, if any
-
Who is the intended audience?
-
Is there lesbian, gay or other queer content?
-
Is there nudity? Adult language?
-
If a musical, is there a written score?
-
If a musical, what are the instrumental requirements? Vocal requirements?
Playwright: Is there a limit on the number of scripts I can submit?
StageQ: Please send us no more than 3 scripts. And please don’t re-submit scripts that you have sent us in the past.
Playwright: Then what happens?
StageQ: We read it, and let you know by March 1, 2009 if your play has been accepted. If all goes well, you get to see your play performed May 28 - June 6, 2009 at the Bartell Theater in Madison, Wisconsin.
Playwright: When are scripts due?
StageQ: October 1, 2008 (that means in our inbox or mailbox by October 1.)
Playwright: Where do I send my play when I’m done writing it?
StageQ: You can e mail your script and précis to QueerShorts@stageq.com.
or send via snail mail to:
Queer Shorts c/o StageQ
PO Box 8876
Madison, WI. 53708-8876
Playwright: What would increase my chances of getting into the playfest?
StageQ: We’re serious about the 15 minute time limit. 5 or 10 minutes would be even better. We’d love to have a musical in the fest! (And we might be willing to increase the time for a musical to 25 minutes.) And call us language snobs, but synopses and scripts full of typos, spelling, grammatical and syntactical errors are not going to knock our socks off. We read almost 300 scripts for Queer Shorts 3 and accepted 11, so make yours easy for us to love.
We acknowledge all scripts received, so if you don’t hear back from us within a couple of weeks, we didn’t receive your submission. (And we’ll be gone for the first two weeks of August, so there will be a delay in acknowledgements during that time.) We’ll also let you know whether or not we selected your script, but please don’t start bugging us about it on March 2nd. If anything else comes up, e-mail us. We’ll answer your questions. OK? Now stop reading this and GET WRITING! We can’t put on a show without your script!
